For my PM experiments I've used a Flanger with two 512 stage BBDs.
512 stages are used for ultra short delays (incl. PM stuff), two BBDs
in series are used for very low, hollow flanger sounds.
If you only want one chip, I'd go for 512 stages.
But: I really don't know what the upper clock limit is for various BBD
circuits from different manufacturers. Of course a 1024 stage chip
@ 1MHz would allow shorter delays than a 512 stage chip with
max. 400kHz clock.
And to make things more complicated, the max clock rate of BBDs
is sometimes "understated" in the data sheet. And a better clock
circuit will probably give useful results at higher clock rates than a
simple one.
