You could upgrade Windows to Linux? Plenty of (free) fun software to play
with. The Ardour (http://ardour.sourceforge.net/) program seems quite
interesting, for example, as well as _loads_ of audio/MIDI-related
software (http://www-ccrma.stanford.edu/planetccrma/software/).
>From a computer-science perspective, VB is a hack at best, a joke at
worst. For example, the language spec changes with every release, and
there is no complete language grammar specification for the language (many
have tried to write one, but you then have to specify which version of the
VB IDE you're targetting, and there are lots of hidden rules... *sigh*
... news:comp.compilers makes interesting reading).
But seriously, if it works for you, good luck!! I still prefer
microcontrollers and op-amps :-)
