Ever heard of "granny"?
It's PD or freeware and the old versiojn could produce
one stream of grains.
You can interpolate between different parameter settings,
also with the mouse (graphical mode).
It's very CPU economic, and you can always record direct
to hard disk.

There are a lot of parameters and I remember that it took
a while until I could figure out what is what,
this means this program is able to create non-trivial
sound.

I have recorded an entire piece, just feeding some spoken
sentence into granny and re-aranging all the output.

Hi,
You can do powerful granular synthesis with csound. Also great for granular
processing (using little fragments <20ms from one or several samples as
grain content)
