Check out this sample, if you want to hear something I created that sounds
somewhat similar:

This does *not* use granular synthesis, but I think it has a similar feel
to it.
The first file is the original sound, and #2 is the processed one. Listen
to the second one about 3/4 of the way toward the end, it sounds like the
original sound is being played "sideways" or something. It sure isn't
backwards or forwards, at least. I wish I had a "wet signal only" version
of #2, but I think you can still make out the effect in the not-so-distant
background. :)
