this is one of my favourite websites for small and simple designs:

an oscillator with a 555 chip, 2 resistors and a capacitor.it's one of the
first things i actually built from scratch on breadboard. it may not be a
true vco, but it's a very simple oscillator.
the great thing abuot this site is it also shows the drawings and board
layouts for most projects. the hardest part for me is always 'translating'
the schematic to a board layout that is right. that's already done here..
