David,  Without a doubt, Raymond Scott was one of the first EM innovators.
As far as I know, he was the first to come up with the idea of a step style
sequencer.  If you are truly interested in his innovations and the history
of EM, check out his dual CD and book combo, "Manhattan Research, Inc."
