after 6 revisions I have finally made a good compact PCB for my processor. I 
am going to order a test run in the next few days and if those boards work 
then I can order more for those who might want them. obviously, the board 
house is big time raping me on the small quantity thing so expect to pay 
between $15 and $20 depending on how many PCBs I order.
this PCB has parts locations to build the "dual core" version and also has 
an "expansion connector" location to easily add the new features I have 
mentioned for step height/sequencer controls.
also, unless I order 24 or more PCBs, solder mask and silkscreen will be 
added to my wish-list for Santa Claus this X-mas ;-)
