The USA split shaft is a grooved shaft on the outside... with a slot cut in
the middle all the way down to the base.  In effect, the split shaft acts as a
spring. Some knobs for this shaft also include a spring clip to make the
knob press-fit even tighter.

Can't use a setscrew knob on this type, unless you cut a shim to fill the
split... even then the knob will prlly sit crooked.

I hate them, personally
