Not speaking about specific magazines now (we have a "good" one
and a "bad" one here in Germany, too!), there are two very different
bussiness aims such a magazine can have.

The first one is what we normally expect (at least I did, in all
naivity): The reader is the customer, the magazine is the product
which is sold to the customer.

The second one was explained to me much later, and it sounds 
very convincing: The advertiser is the customer, the reader is the
product.

A lot of things suddenly make sense if you look at them the second
way.
