Hi Peter,

Well, a couple of reasons here... originally I was going to build a very
basic 4017 sequencer, keeping it as simple as possible. (this very quickly
got out of hand, though : ). But also, I couldn't really think of a use for
the stage pulses other than resetting the sequences, for which I'm using
rotary switches. I'm sure I just don't have enough experience patching
modulars. What else could I use them for?

As far as the LEDs... yep, each bank runs on it's own 4017 and can therefore
cycle at different intervals. The really interesting feature is that the
reset pulse from each of the counters drives a flip-flop that switches
between the 'A' & 'B' channels for the output of the center 'AB' channel.

So, if the seq lengths are set to 8/8, you get a 16 step seq at the AB
output. But if you set the seqs to unequal lengths, (particularly primes,
like 5/7 or 7/3), you get all sorts of pseudo-random patterns. I've got
tables worked out that illustrate this, which I'll post to my site soon.

Thanks,
Mike
