And wasn't one of the intentions of both USB and 1394 to use new connectors,
so people didn't confuse them with other plugs behind their computer?  And
USB is intended that the host can auto-configure any peripheral...

And this after I helped some folks debug a problem with their new gigabit
ethernet setup...they were plugging the fiber right into the hole in the
back of the adapter, no optic module, just fiber into empty hole.  I think
the original optic module had been thrown away with the packaging &
documentation.  They weren't happy to learn that there was one more
expensive piece required before the card would function.
