Hiya John...
funny you should mention it. Today at work we were discussing some
ball screw type servo linear actuators... which we want to apply precise
forces, as well as positions. After proving (twice) to another engineer
that the 'friction' of the ball screw was the same from the rotating and linear
motion points of view (differing only in the mechanical advantage)...
he suggested that a slower (pitch) screw would have a much better
performance.
I said that for automotive applications... the linear motion was already too
slow and a finer pitch would make it even worse...
...and then I told him "stay with me on the turns here... I can only think of
ONE situation where a "slower screw" would be an appropriate thing..."
(much to the merriment of all the other engineers within earshot)
H^) harry
(another engineer pointed out it might make a difference if you were making
cars... or people)
So John if you ever need a job... look us up. We need more folk with your
sense of humor ;^P
