My understanding is that gold doesn't oxidize as easily as other
metals...many metals like to form an insulating layer of oxide when exposed
to air. Of course, for real oxidation protection, you need to have gold on
both sides being connected...and you need high enough quality gold plating
that it doesn't scrape off after the connector has been actuated a few times.
