The socket cover wouldn't do much for moisture; it would keep out the dust,
crud, bird droppings, etc.
That IS a very good question about gold contacts, though; all of the
devices I was talking about used the old (& in some cases, hella cheap) tin
socket pins.
I haven't had enough experience with gold to make a judgement; it SEEMS
like it would be more impervious to decay -- anybody have any hard facts?
