[sdiy] Best way to get +5 from +-12

I'm wondering what the best way to get +5 from a +-12 is. Will a guy who 
really needs to learn more about power supplies run into any problems if he 
just slaps a 5v Zener on the +12 line? Forgive me if this has been discussed 
to death before.
