Check out the CD4017 chip "johnson counter with decoded outputs"
and also any multiplexer chips such as CD4051...
Basically you need to make a counter with decoded outputs.
It is also possible to make a 'ring counter' which passes
a pulse from stage to stage. These were common in the transistor
days... less common with ICs
Try Google for 4017, 4051, or "ring counter"
