This is exactly what i recall was the basic design of the old DBX
"1BX,2BX,and 3BX" sub-harmonic synthesizers.

Hi Mike and List,
A friend picked up a dBx subharmonic synthesizer (or whatever it's
called) - expecting something really neat - and found a CD4013 flip-flop
being used as an octave divider, along with an envelope follower and VCA
to duplicate the dynamics of the original signal. Still neat, but
nothing magical.
