Oh sure it can...

You just have to be more creative.  Here's one way:

 pos input to speaker1-pos and to switch1-parallel
 neg input to speaker2-neg and to switch2-wiper
 speaker1-neg to switch1-series and to switch2-parallel
 speaker2-pos to switch1-wiper
 switch2-series is left unconnected
