Your story reminds me of my old Bell and Howell tube scope.  It also lost
the HV transformer with a brilliant flash and thick clouds of noxious
smoke....

It's 3 years later and I think I can still smell the residual odor in my
workshop....  aaaahhhhh... memories :)
