You can also do it with a DIY soldering station, see

It's in German, though, so you might wanna use Babelfish (<yoda>a rather
amusing result, that translation is </yoda>:)

You can check for correct contact by measuring the voltage through the
protection diodes of the I/O pins (assuming your chip has such diodes,
with FPGAs it's common).
