Actually, the only time I use a DMM is when I am tuning oscillators.  (I 
always make sure I am making a 1 volt per octave pitch change).  I would 
agree with Harry that a Scope is by far the most useful tool for DIY, if 
you have to choose.  If you are going to be tuning VCOs, I would however 
recommend the purchase of at least a 4 1/2 digit DMM.  If you are not going 
to be doing any critical tuning...heck, you probably could just use the 
scope for doing voltage measurements.
