Because modular synthesizers are made from electronics, there is a tendency
to view them like a toaster oven. That is to say something which can be
compared by a list of features offered.
In reality, they are so different in concept and form, that they are exactly
like acoustic musical instruments, different and varied with traditions and
history each of it's own. It's silly to say that a violin is inherently
better than a trumpet.
As time goes by, I think "manufacturers" are starting to see themselves more
like fine craftsmen, and less like industrial moguls. We really do not
compete with each other, any more than a violin maker competes with a
trumpet maker.
Collectively, we are the keepers of a fine tradition, it MAY someday be
recognized as such. The "soft synth" craze actually works towards this. The
more a modern digital synthesizer becomes a pattern of photons on a flat
screen, the closer a hand built analog synthesizer comes to resemble a hand
built violin.
Peace and Happy Holidays.
