Hi Charles,
A friend of mine had a similar experience. Be advised that the transistors
that Rene has in his layout are European transistors, which have the
collector and emitter reversed to American transistors. If you used 2N39XX
transistors, and didn't reverse them to begin with, that's the problem (it
was for my friend).
