[sdiy] Dumb surface mount question

For hobby stuff, sure, mix and match....
For production stuff, it is a different story....
The rule of thumb I remember someone telling me is that each thru hole
component costs $1.00 to put on a PC board (this is mostly the labor needed
to do this operation). Surface mount components are very inexpensive to
put onto a board in a production environment.
For hobby stuff, I still prefer thru hole. I realize that this is a
preference that is going to be short lived (i.e. forced to capitulate to
the surface mount side of the force)....but for me, putting thru hole
components on a board is still cheaper (in the amount of time spent) than
surface mount.
