Why 9V, are you thinking of 9V block batteries? I'd consider using
so-called racing packs (NiMH), standard voltage for those is 7.2V and
you get a decent 1.2-3.5Ah capacity depending on size. Admittedly a bit
bulky and adds about 1.5kg to lug around, but with a simple adapter you
can use the packs on the road and a proper PSU at home. You can
probably run four NiMH packs unregulated if the circuits are not too
finicky about the power supply. Voltage is an almost constant 1.2V per
cell over most of the discharge curve and does not change much with
load if you get high current, low series resistance packs.
