Yeah, you can do that...but, I would not recomend it.

Try to find a linear power supply.  You can get these surplus from various 
places.  What you are looking for is +/- 15 volts at about 1 amp (more is 
better if you can find it)...

Look for names like Power One, Condor...a few others that slip my mind.
