Thanks folks,

that was exactly what I wanted to know :)

I'll give it a try.. Since I'm only replacing emitter followers with 1mA
collector current I don't even care to much.

My guess is the designer was paranoid to load the input. I haven't
calculated the impendance, but it looks like even a single high gain
transistor will be fine here.

  Now it's time to heat the solder iron..
