But also consider proximity-- a headphone isn't meant to project more than an inch or so (though it can quietly project a few meters) in a relatively constraint space, while a 12" speaker is generally meant to project ~500 times farther (guessing up to 40 feet) in a relatively open space.
At any rate, this is why I'm no PhD! :) Anything I declare should be taken as a poorly phrased question asking for correction.

But there are 15 inch drivers out there that are a hell of a lot more
efficient than headphone speakers. Remember, while a smaller cone will react
to less energy, a larger cone moves a lot more air - and this contributes
to a drivers efficiency.
