Sure.. distortion leads to a higher perceived volume. It adds harmonics in
the mid and upper frequency range. Those are perceived louder than low
frequencies at the same energy.

Guitar amplifiers are perceived louder because they have a different
frequency response within the amplifier and the speakers. You don't want a
lot of bass for a guitar amp, and neither you want lots heights above 5 kHz.

Say I drive a guitar amp at 2 watts (measured at the output), and do the
same on a home stereo. Which one will be louder? The guitar amp. But only
because it won't "waste" so much power for the low frequency parts. If you
eq your stereo for the same frequency response they'll be equal loud.. How
should a speaker coil know if the current comes from a coil or silicon
junction?


(btw, it's getting really offtopic now, I'll stop before someone starts to
make jokes about guitarists that can't even tune their instruments properly
