Well, a PhD is a career move too.
So it isn't that simple.

A PhD is (in principle) about proving that the candidate is
capable of performing useful & original research work (or at 
least it is here in Australia). It isn't about fact accumulation.

Curiously enough, some of the most useful & creative people I know 
have PhDs. And so do some of the most useless, invincibly ignoratnt
turkeys in the world...

Where a lot of unhappiness occurs, is when someone assumes that
because they are an expert in one field, they AUTOMATICALLY are 
experts in any other field. Of course, nobody with a shred of 
insight would make this mistake :D
