go for the top dog - MEGA128-16
16MIPs @ 16Mhz, 4K ram, loads and loads of IO, two USARTs SPI, JTAG and a
whole bunch of other goodies..

the STK500 rocks, its a great little starter kit.
If you want to play with the MEGA128 (Surface mount) get the STK501, which
sits on top of the STK500 and has a ZIF socket for the MEGA128.
