yes, you could just have a lookup table a simple timer running on an
interupt..
The greater the value, the faster the pulses are sent out.

true, something you'd only know through playing.
Though could always build a lookup table relating ADc value to pulse time,
assuming that you're not going to need anywhere near 8bit resoloution this
would be a maximum of a 256byte table..
