Don't forget that balanced modulation is just crossfading between out of
phase signals. Some high quality VCAs and phase inverters can be used to
patch up an "audiophile" balanced modulator on a modular synth.
You feed the modulation signal to a crossfader with 2x (2 quadrant) VCAs and
a phase inverter with offset. Feed an in phase and phase inverted carrier
signal to each VCA input. Sum the outputs and adjust the gain so the out of
phase carrier signals cancel.
This lets you use VCAs that are as "audiophile" as you can afford.
