I think because they are much stronger, having a 4mm plated brass rod
shoved into a mating hole.  I've known 4mm bananas last _years_ in
possibly the most harsh environment any electronic apparatus could find
itself in---a school lab!

After being inserted into bodily orifices, trodden on, eaten, thrown
across the room, zapped across power supplies, re-inserted into yet more
bodily orifices, dunked in sinks or vats of noxious chemicals, and so on,
and they still function as a connector (if a somewhat sticky and smelly
one at that).

PS: just _don't_ ask about the bodily orifices, ok?  So I was young, it
was a long time ago, no human sustained any long-term damage....*sheesh*
you'd think some people have a problem about certain natural functions....
