You've already gotten some good ideas.  What I have used is the pins and 
sockets that you insert into Molex connectors.  Solder the wires to the 
pins/sockets and put some small diam heat shrink over them.  I've mostly 
used them floating (mechanically),  but you could epoxy the pins or sockets 
into holes in a PC board or other piece of plastic for a fixed arrangement.
