As you say: it depends on...

I did think the same way as long I used my modular synthesizers for making
conventional rock/pop music. I created a patch and did not change it
whilest a song.

Now I do more electronic and improvised music and I change the patch
setting while the synth creates a sound. Example I want to fade over from a
moogish low pass filter to a VCphaser and then to a 12db multimode filter.

For that I need a setup like this
   
     /----filter1-\
VCO->              Mixer->
     \----filter2-/


Of course I could use multiples for this, but often I originally do not
plan this change. In this case a second audio output is really good.
