I always had dogs (for twelve years it was Otto, an irish setter, now it is
Felix, a collie-mix); both like to chew on cables when they were young -
especially power cables! But both never touched a power cable that was
plugged in the poweroutlet in the wall. It seems the animals have a sense
for the electrical field.
Btw: One story from Otto, back then I worked as sound engineer in a studio
and the dog always layed down under the console; he changed his position a
littlebit from time to time, turned from the left to the right cheek or
so. One day we did a lot of very wierd cabling through the whole studio -
also under the desk. The dog kept always quite calm, but he always was very
interested when we crawled under the desk to plug in something into the
backside of some new gear located in a rack beside the desk, which a
musician had brought for this session. We did not care for the dog, but whe
we went for having some pizza it was very astonishing that the dog did not
appear immediately - "pizza" definitely was one of the central keywords in
Ottos life. So we looked for him and found him - totally tied up by the
cables, one foot up over his head and unable to move. Appearently he was
that curious for a fan in a rack device, so he tried to sniff in and touch
withhis foot - until he found himself tied in the the cables. Now he knew,
that it was his own fault, but he did not want to admit this, so he hoped
we would over look it - even for the prize not getting a pizza...
> Oh well, at least I can blame her now when the circuit won't work ;-)
Felix, the collie, is always with me at work, which is a phone support
center for Hewlett Packards Unix. If the dog barks, my customers at the
phone are very astonished:
Customer: "Was this a dog?"
Florian: "Yes, this was my dog"
Customer: "Is this possible at your company? With all the computers?
Our boss never would allow a dog inside the computer
department or the server room."
Florian: "You know, I had to do with around 6000 computer problems
since I started this job here. Until now I had not a single
problem caused by a dog, around 800 were caused by faulty
hardware, and around 5200 caused by human beeings, who have
access to the computer department."
Most customer laugh then...
