Dear Chris,
if you do disconnect the scan coils and the Tv chassis does power up,
without any signal applied to the coils you will burn a hole in the
phosphor coating of the TV tube.
a lot of tv chassis have a power supply that isn't isolated from the
mains supply so its most important that you either use one that does
have the isolation from the mains supply or use an external isolation
transformer.
you do need to be very carefull when modifying Tv receivers as there are
lots of places where you can get nasty shocks from the high voltages
involved.
sometimes there is an additional link between two pins on the scan coil
plug so that if the plug does get disconnected then the Tv won't power
up and ruin the CRT tube .
regards Peter
