Hi Cris + all,
This is a link for a DIY plate reverb. I'd love to build one. Not shure
where to place it. It's big.
http://www.prosoundweb.com/recording/tapeop/plate/plate.php
This link is about doing the maintenance of an EMT reverb. Some info:
http://www.record-producer.com/NewFiles/Emt.pdf
I used original EMT plate reverb. Sounded great. I made it selfoscilate
nicely. But as you can see on the
documetation within the above link you need mechanical contact to make it
vibrate with a
respectable amplitude and some precision. The other way is make it vibrate
simphateticaly (what you
are trying to do, if understood you)
I made "sing" simphatetically plates with my voice many times (as I think
most of you did at least once)
You just try to find a freq that is easely excited with just your voice or,
of course, any other signal.
Like finding the -main- resonant freq of a room or the stairs-hole (oops!
that's not english) again with
your voice. Same with an orchestra's gong (tam tam) or a cymbal...
So it is difficult for me to imagine why you can't put that plate in
oscillation...
May be it needs lots of energy to get in to audible oscilation (because of
large mass) and there is lots
of damping. First of all, I'd try with higher excitation freqs.
Also, freqs that low needs lots of power to be "emanated" and a very good
low-freq amp and -big-
speaker (15''?). And that waves need space to "develop". If your speaker is
too close to the plate... not
good. Not all of the wave will hit the plate. You can experiment this with a
good subwoofer. Go away
and you'll realy hear to the sound being projected from it.
Well just thoughts and some experiences from a composer. Hope of being of
any help.
(and excuse my terrible english)
Fernando
