Steve,
the Synbal project at the E-Music DIY site
http://www.physicsenterprises.andrews.edu/diy_archive/schematics/drums/
has a nice circuit based on inverter-oscillators and an XOR chip (upper-left
hand corner of the schematic) to make nice hihat sound when mixed with a
simple transistor noise source and gated with a simple 3080 VCA followed by
a HPF. It's not single-chip solution but is relatively easy and lends well
to customization by experimenting with cap values. I got a very DR-110
sounding HH and Ride from this.
