Sheppard Tones per se can get boring pretty quickly.
OTOH the same technique applied to various sound
processing modules (such as BPF bank, phasers,
pitchshifters) can lead to very exciting effects.
I've made some experiments on a DSP board running
IRCAM-MAX, and the Sheppard technique applied to
a bank of phasers sounded great with a drum loop or
a sequence.
The most exciting effect was made with the reverb of
a drum loop plugged into a bank of pitchshifters whose
freq & amp enveloppes were driven by a Sheppard setup.
Most exciting : the reverb spectrum sliced into 3 or 4 bands,
each one passing thru such a bank of "Sheppard pitchshifters"
with various rates & directions (up or down)...
