At last weeks SciSound meeting in Venice, CA i saw Cynthia Webster's ARIES
based Keyboard.
Now as i am on record as not being an aficionado of non-digital keyboards, i
must admit i liked it very much.
I think the cabinetry was perhaps the most compelling characteristic as it
was "heavy" (i lugged it). After all the Plastic keyboards i use (i.e.
Roland A-33) it was interesting to work with a keyboard that seemed so
"substantial". By this i mean it was not going to move if you didn't intend
to lift and move it on purpose it won't go anywhere. If you dropped your
patch cord on the floor reaching down to get it is not going to shift or
disturb this monster in anyway. Also the ARIES design is quite good as is
and has with opportunity for a DIY'er to make it even better (i.e.
polystyrene hold cap) or perhaps, more individually appropriate.
Now i "rack" my keyboards so i am not going to emulate this kind of cabinet
for my keyboards but it was a notably different "experience" and part of an
interesting Synth.
