Proms: [sdiy] hazards to semis?

Ok Maybe this is really an "out there" kinda' response, 
but perhaps it's possible to download data off on an eprom, 
to disk, and then as a back-up... to email the very same data to 
you- so that in a worst case scenario, you could recreate or 
clone the eprom again at your end?

Is this nuts? 
It's got to be simple with the right stuff, but I have little to no 
experience with prom burning and really don't know.
