Yes... one example is Antares "Autotune". Available as a plug-in and as a
hardware box. This is the effect that was abused on the Cher song
"Believe".
The rumor is the engineer was setting up the Autotune to adjust Cher's
performance. The initial settings were too severe and it caused the
massive fast pitch swings you hear in the song. They liked the sound and
decided to keep the effect for the chorus.
Autotune can sound quite transparent when used properly... or abused to get
the "cher sound". This box works in real time, and is often used in live
performance and studio situations.
I'm not sure how well autotune would work with a synth sound (especially
with chords), but it would be fun to try. Anyone have the plugin? Comments?
