i think the concept behind it is different. it's not a 'synth' as such, but
a noise generator.. i'm using mine more as a synth, as a matter of fact i
don't use the 'noise' part much at all...
i think the chip can be what you want it to be.. different perspectives from
designers will make different machines.
but use the online schematics and build your own synth with the chip..
