Hi Niklas,

I have several 555-based EGs and they work quite well.  

One hint:
Buy 7555 timers instead of the 555.  Even with very good R/C decoupling the
555 caused  voltage drops on my powersupply lines that would cause pitch
changes to the VCOs and VCFs in my modular.  Swapping to the less
power-hungry 7555 cured the problem.
