Hi Bo,

You don't need a UART if you use a PIC with a built in USART.  You will however need an external DAC and an OpAmp or so.  There are no PICs with a good enough DAC for MIDI2CV.

I have a circuit (mail me offlist if you're interested), but it's quite a big design, so isn't very simple.  You should check out Tony Allgood's MIDI DAC 2 at this link:

This is quite simple if you ignore the pitch sliding and bending stuff on page 2 of the schematic.  If you want it even more simple with only 1 CV output, also ignore the MUX (U5) and 8 opamps hanging off it.

Add a buffer offamp on the end of "DAC-OUT", and you could run the CV straight from this.  For the Gate, the simplest way is to run an output pin straight from the PIC through a transistor or 2 to buffer it, get it to the right voltage, reduce digital noise, etc..

However, I warn you there is nothing simple about making a *good* MIDI2CV (and by "good" I mean accuracy rather than features).  There are many issues to consider.
