There was a type of prototype board called 'blob board'. Basically, it
was like standard strip board without the holes. You simply soldered the
components onto the tracks. I didn't find it terribly useful.
Another way of prototyping stuff comes from the RF chaps. Here you use a
piece of copper clad board and stick little self-adhesive pieces of
track onto to the copper side. You can chop this stuff to any length and
it can be bought for different RF impedances too. Components are simply
soldered onto the tracks and copper layer where needed. You can also get
it for DIL, SO-IC and other packages too. Haven't seen the stuff for
years, although probably because I haven't had to use a smith chart for
years either. Hurray!
