Hi Pete and list,
The 24-stager is just a fairly ordinary (but long) phaser using CD4049 
hex inverters as voltage-controlled resistor banks in the typical 
fashion, along with low-noise op amps. A compander is still essential 
for noise reduction. The ARP phaser approach using transistor arrays 
would achieve a similar result using fewer parts and a simpler board 
layout. Good CV-rejection is necessary for thump-free S/H modulation.
