I have built a MOTM VCO module (I have more modules on order). My experience was that it was really easy - it came with *everything* you need (even nice water-soluble solder!), and instructions that a child could follow.

It also came with a theory of operation which, although not overly detailed, was enough to give me (with basic knowledge of electronics) a good idea how it all worked.

So, yes IMO MOTM are a good kit for a beginner who can solder well (don't ruin such a nice kit with bad soldering ;-)

As for the oakleysound modules, I've never built one - but they look pretty good, and you can't go too far wrong with a silk-screened PCB. I guess the main headache will be tracking down all the right components, although the documentation looks pretty helpful in this respect. The "official" frontpanels can be ordered from a company in Germany, but I think the shipping might be quite pricey to outside Europe. Or you could always make your own front panels - there's a few good resources on how to do this on the net .. it all depends whether you value your time more than money!

Seb

P.S. The only problem with starting with MOTM is that you will want all your other modules to match the quality .. and HQ pots, jacks and panels do not come cheap!

P.P.S. And of course you will need to build/buy a good power supply to run your modules .. and a case.
